Verdict Express

B Bullish Tactical — 10-15 sessions, not a hold

PSIX makes engines and packaged power systems, including the gensets data centers buy for backup and prime power, and is majority-owned by China's Weichai. The stock collapsed 74% from its February high to $25.28 on July 29, then reclaimed 63% in seven sessions. The last leg was a +21% gap on Friday, off Thursday evening's Q2 print: revenue $152.5M against a $134M estimate, gross margin up 420bps sequentially to 27.1%, $30.8M of debt paid down in one quarter SEC EDGAR 8-K · Aug 2026. Set against that: a 7.3M-share float with 23.9% of it sold short, and a chart still below its 200-day average. This is a momentum-and-squeeze trade with defined risk, not a quality compounder. Our five-lens value board votes 4/5 bearish at this price.

Why Buy

  • Q2 revenue of $152.5M beat the $134M estimate by 14% and grew 18.6% over Q1, the sequential inflection the bulls were waiting for after two soft quarters.
  • Gross margin of 27.1% (up ~420bps from Q1) plus $30.8M of debt reduction in a single quarter, on a company carrying $168.8M of total debt.
  • Squeeze mechanics: 1.76M shares short (FINRA, July 15 settlement) on a 7.3M float, i.e. 23.9%, with 3.9 days to cover, and call OI stacked 3.5:1 over puts into August 21 expiry.
  • Management guides second-half sales roughly in line with H2 2025 as larger Power Systems orders enter production, materially stronger than the H1 run-rate, with data center demand called out as solid.
  • EV/EBITDA at 10.2x and trailing earnings around $3.00/share put the P/E near 13x: not deep value after the gap, but low enough that a durable margin repair re-rates it.

Why Avoid

  • The growth optics are still negative: revenue fell 21% year-over-year and EPS of $0.73 compares with $2.24 a year ago. The two 2026 quarters both missed a consensus that is only one or two analysts wide.
  • Price sits 26.2% above its own 20-day average after two unfilled gaps. A fill of Friday's gap alone is roughly -20% to $33 without invalidating anything fundamental.
  • Governance churn: third CEO since May (Xykis out, CFO Li interim, Richard Hu effective August 17), inside a company ~63% insider-held with Weichai in control. The tiny float cuts both ways.
  • Our deterministic value/quality board votes 4/5 bearish: operating margin 8.9%, gross margin 24.3% TTM, debt-to-equity 0.91, price 41% above its Graham number. Multi-method intrinsic valuation returned no verdict; the cash-flow detail it requires is not available with enough confidence, so we won't pretend to a fair value.

Business Overview

Power Solutions International (Wood Dale, Illinois, ~1,000 employees) designs and manufactures engines and integrated power systems: emission-certified engines, custom-engineered generator sets for standby and prime power, enclosures and electrification components. Its power systems serve data centers, oil & gas, microgrids, demand response and rental fleets; industrial products power forklifts and off-road equipment; a transportation line serves trucks and specialty vehicles. The company is majority-owned by Weichai America (insiders hold 63.2% overall), which leaves a public float of roughly 7.3M shares out of 23.1M outstanding. The 2026 story is a mix shift: larger Power Systems orders (data center gensets prominent among them) moving into production while the legacy industrial and transportation lines digest a soft first half. The beat streak broke in 2026: two straight EPS misses. But the consensus here is one or two analysts, and Friday's tape graded the revenue line (+14% vs estimate), not the EPS line. Read this table with that asterisk. — Next: 5 November 2026 Yahoo Finance — Analysis · live

Technical Setup

The structure is a broken downtrend attempting a V: 52-week high $121.78 (August 2025), February high near $99, then a five-month slide to $25.28 on July 29. The reversal came in two gaps, +6.0% on August 4 and +21.3% on Friday, neither filled. Price at $41 sits 26.2% above the 20-day EMA ($32.58), above the 50-day ($37.33), and well below the 200-day ($53.82). Friday's intraday range ran $38.28-$42.03, with the June range high at $43.23 the last shelf before the air pocket the May collapse left behind: there is little traded volume between $43 and the mid-$50s. ATR is ~$3 and the August 21 straddle prices a ±15% move. Size for that, not for a normal industrial.

Risk Analysis

Risk Profile: Elevated

The risk is not dilution or solvency; both check out clean. It is buying a 2-beta, 100%-IV controlled company 26% above its 20-day average, the morning after a print the (very thin) consensus scored as an EPS miss. The invalidation levels don't cover the calendar either: at beta 2.1, the 10-15 session window crosses mid-August macro (CPI, Jackson Hole), and a risk-off tape can hand this name a stop-out day with zero PSIX news. The half-size guidance is there for that too, not just the float.

Extension and open gaps

High
  • Price is 26.2% above the 20-day EMA, and both August gaps ($28.78 to $30.50, $33.02 to $40.06) are unfilled
  • A routine fill of Friday's gap is roughly -20% to $33 without changing the fundamental story
Probability
Impact
Managed by entry discipline (no chase above $42) and the $34.70 stop. Accept the miss if it runs without a pullback.

Controlled company, 7.3M float, CEO churn

High
  • Weichai holds ~51%, insiders 63.2%. Minority holders ride along on strategy, dividends and any future take-out terms
  • Third CEO since May: Xykis out, CFO Li interim, Richard Hu (ex-BorgWarner) effective August 17
  • The same float that fuels the squeeze produced -50% in two sessions in May ($75.91 on May 8 to $38.00 on May 12)
Probability
Impact
Structural, not fixable. This is why the grade is B and the sizing guidance is half a normal position — and note that at over 100% annualized realized volatility, a standard position ceiling already halves to roughly 10% of a book. Half of normal here means ~5%, not 10%.

Growth optics still negative

Medium
  • Revenue -21% YoY, EPS $0.73 vs $2.24 a year ago; H1 2026 revenue $281M trails the FY2025 pace
  • H2 guided 'in line with H2 2025': a re-acceleration versus H1, but roughly a flat full year versus 2025
  • Value/quality board 4/5 bearish: this is not a compounder at 4.3x book with 8.9% operating margins
Probability
Impact
The trade thesis is margin repair + positioning, deliberately not a growth thesis. If November's Q3 doesn't show the guided H2 ramp, exit regardless of price.

Dilution & balance sheet — positively verified clean

  • No compliance, halt or FTD flags; cost-to-borrow not published (unknown, not zero)

Thesis

Q2 showed real operational repair (a 14% revenue beat, 420bps of sequential gross-margin gain, $30.8M of debt retired) into a 7.3M-share float carrying 24% short interest positioned during the slide to $25. Above $43.23 there is almost no traded supply until the mid-$50s. Friday's 21% gap says buyers were grading the revenue and margin lines, whatever the EPS headline scored. Tactical long at half size, 10-15 sessions.

Catalysts

  • August 21 opex: call OI massed at $50-$55 with max pain at $40. A hold above $40 into expiry can pull hedging flows upward — supportive, not guaranteed Yahoo Finance — Options · live
  • Richard Hu takes over as CEO August 17, the first outside operator hire (ex-BorgWarner) after months of interim leadership
  • Short covering: 1.76M shares short vs ~447K average daily volume, 3.9 days to cover at normal tape
  • Q3 print (November 5) is the checkpoint for the guided H2 Power Systems ramp

Invalidation

  • Daily close below $34.86 (the August 4 close): Friday's gap is filling and the reversal failed. Exit, no averaging down
  • Still below $38 at the August 21 close: the squeeze didn't take and the position has no edge left. Close it even without the stop
  • Q3 report (November 5) missing the guided H2 ramp ends the thesis for any residual runner
